Spice labelling
The irregularly triangular-rounded, one-sided pointed, 4 mm long and 3 mm wide hard seeds are used as a spice. They are surrounded by a fleshy, red to orange-coloured seed coat (Arillus), which contains the yellow-red dye bixin.
Taste
Essential oil is responsible for the violet-like smell and spicy taste.
